Visitors Welcome

In 2012, the Irvine Golf Club celebrated its 125-year anniversary. Over the years, the course has built up a reputation as being a very testing links course with a very friendly clubhouse.

The Club has produced three Scottish Amateur Champions, a World Junior Champion, a Walker Cup player, and a British Seniors Champion.

We have staged numerous Open Championship Final Qualifying events with the R & A and recently co-hosted the British Amateur Championship with Royal Troon. In 2009 we hosted the Ladies Home Internationals, in 2011 we hosted the prestigious Scottish Seniors Open Championship and in 2015 we hosted the Scottish Youths Championship and also the final qualifying for the Ricoh Ladies British Open at Turnberry. In 2022 we will also be the host club for the Scottish Girls Championships. This year 2024 we are proud to be hosting the Scottish Boys Champioships in April.

The golf course is generally in excellent condition and the greens stand comparison with anyone's.

We look forward to receiving visitors and I extend a warm invitation to you all.

Three Scottish Champions

There used to be a tiny village of less than 200 people to the north side of the 15th green.  It is no longer there today, but the 15th hole is now named after it, to preserve the name “Bartonholm” in the past, present and future of the club. There are not many golf clubs that can boast to have members that have won their country’s Amateur Championship but the Irvine Golf Club is proud that not one, but three former Scottish Amateur Champions.  Hamiton (“Hammy”) McInally, James (“Jimmy”) Walker and John (“Jack”) Cannon, all hailed from the tiny mining village of Bartonholm, and honed their skills over the course before going on win major golfing accolades and championships.

Hammy represented Scotland in the 1930’s and 1940’s, Jimmy in the 1950’s and 1960’s and Jack was selected to play for his country in 1969 and 1974. Jack’s Scottish Amateur Championship win in 1969 gave him the record, which still stands today, for being the oldest ever winner at the age of 52. Jack Cannon also won the Scottish Seniors (joint winner) in 1978 & 1982.

James Braid Course Design

When it comes to playing golf in Scotland, one thing you are guaranteed to find is variety and at the Irvine Golf Club it comes in abundance.

The course owes much of its character to the legendary course designer, James Braid.

It is highly regarded by the R&A being used as a final qualifying course for the Open Championship, when it is hosted by near neighbours, Royal Troon or Trump Turnberry.

The Irvine Golf Club is a traditional links course, where greens run true and golfing challenges can be found at every hole. The Braid design uses the natural contours to best effect and no two holes are alike. No matter how many times you return to play this fabulous course, you will enjoy the experience as if for the first time, as you discover more of its interesting features and character.

It is part of the James Braid West Coast trail and represents a fine example of his course architecture, blended with the breath taking landscapes and views over the Firth of Clyde.
